A refurbished iPhone can work exactly as it should for years. It can also be a scratched phone with a tired battery and no one to call when it fails. In Ireland you can buy from Apple, high-street chains, phone shops, marketplaces and specialist refurbishers, and the label "refurbished" means something slightly different at each.

So the best place to buy a refurbished iPhone in Ireland isn't one name. It's whichever seller can give clear answers to six questions. Here they are, with what a good answer looks like.

1. How long is the warranty, and who honours it?

The warranty tells you how confident the seller is in its own work. Look for three things:

  • Length. Twelve months is common. Some refurbishers offer longer, and at Refurb Phone every refurbished iPhone comes with a 24-month warranty.
  • Who you deal with. On a marketplace the warranty may sit with a third-party seller you've never heard of. Check who repairs or replaces the phone if something goes wrong.
  • What it excludes. Every warranty excludes some things. Ours doesn't cover drops, liquid damage or repairs done elsewhere, which is typical, so read the terms before you buy.

A warranty is in addition to your statutory rights under Irish consumer law, not instead of them. A seller who suggests otherwise is a seller to avoid.

2. What battery health is guaranteed?

Battery health is the single biggest difference between a good refurbished iPhone and a frustrating one. iPhones report it as a percentage of the battery's original capacity, under Settings > Battery.

A good seller states a minimum in writing. Ours is at least 80% on every refurbished iPhone, and at least 85% in the Like New grade. If a listing doesn't mention battery health at all, ask before you buy. If the seller can't answer, assume the worst.

What 80% battery health means in practice

An iPhone at 80% holds about four-fifths of the charge it held when new. For most people that still gets through a normal day. Apple itself treats 80% as the line at which a battery is considered worn, so a guarantee at or above it is a sensible floor.

3. How is the condition graded?

Grades are where refurbished listings get vague. "Grade A", "Excellent" and "Pristine" mean whatever each seller decides. The useful question is what the grade says about visible wear.

At Refurb Phone there are three grades, and every one is fully functional:

  • Like New: no visible signs of use.
  • Very Good: slight cosmetic signs of use.
  • Used: visible scratches or scuffs, at the lowest price.

You can see photos and the full comparison on our grading page. Whoever you buy from, look for that kind of plain description rather than a letter.

4. Is it tested properly, and is it unlocked?

A refurbished iPhone should be tested on more than whether it switches on. Professional refurbishers use diagnostic software that checks the screen, cameras, speakers, microphones, buttons, sensors, Face ID or Touch ID, charging and connectivity. We test every device with M360 Diagnostics.

Ask too whether the phone is unlocked. A locked iPhone only works on one network. An unlocked one works with Three, Vodafone, Eir and the smaller Irish networks that run on them, and lets you switch later. Every iPhone we sell is unlocked, which is also why "unlocked phones Ireland" is worth searching if you plan to keep your current SIM.

5. Can you return it, and how easily?

When you buy online from a business in the EU, you normally have 14 days to cancel without giving a reason. Check how the seller handles that in practice: who pays for the return, how you get a returns number and how quickly refunds are paid.

Our refund policy sets this out in full. A seller that hides its returns process, or only offers store credit, is telling you something.

6. Who is the seller, and where are they?

A real address, a company name and a way to reach a person matter more online than in a shop. Before you pay, check:

  • the company name and address on the legal or contact page;
  • whether reviews mention after-sales help, not just delivery speed;
  • whether the price is realistic for the model and grade.

An iPhone listed far below every other seller is usually missing something: a good battery, a working part, or a seller who'll still be there next month.

Apple, high-street shop, marketplace or specialist?

Each type of seller has a trade-off.

  • Apple's own refurbished store sells as-new units with a new battery and outer shell, but the range is limited to recent models and stock comes and goes.
  • High-street chains are convenient if you want to see the phone first. Range and grading vary by store.
  • Marketplaces offer the widest choice, but you're buying from many different sellers with different standards.
  • Specialist refurbishers focus on refurbished devices only. The good ones publish their grading, battery minimum and warranty on every listing.

Whichever you choose, the six questions above apply. If a seller answers all of them clearly, it's a good place to buy.

Which refurbished iPhone should you buy?

For most people in Ireland, a model from the last few generations is the sweet spot. Newer models get iOS updates for longer, while older ones cost less. Popular choices include:

Frequently asked questions

Are refurbished iPhones reliable?

Yes, when they've been properly tested and come with a warranty and a stated battery minimum. The risk lies with untested second-hand phones, not with refurbishment itself.

Do refurbished iPhones work on Irish networks?

An unlocked refurbished iPhone works on Three, Vodafone, Eir and the networks that use their masts. Check the listing says unlocked before you buy.

Is buying a refurbished iPhone online safe?

It is if the seller gives a real company name, a warranty and a clear returns process. Online purchases from EU businesses normally come with a 14-day right to cancel.

Is a refurbished iPhone the same as second-hand?

No. A second-hand phone is sold as it is. A refurbished one has been tested, repaired where needed, cleaned and graded, and comes with a warranty.
